Upcoming Types of Cosmetic Pet Surgery for Dogs

Jose Reid

Every pet owner dreads the day their beloved pet will have to undergo surgery; however, it is essential to know that the surgery will get conducted by meticulous, skilled and caring hands. Most pet surgeries revolve around desexing, dental surgeries, tumour removal and stitching. However, there are other types of operations available for pets that most pet owners have not heard of. Some of these surgeries revolve around pet owners wanting to enhance the appearance of their pets. Below are some examples of such pet surgeries.

•    Testicular Implants

When male dogs get desexed, they usually are psychologically affected because they are not considered 'manly' enough to mate by female dogs. Testicular implant is a type of pet surgery where a male dog gets fake testicles that provide the necessary appearance for the dogs to interact with their female counterparts. Thus, if your dog is feeling deprived of its male faculties after getting neutered, this is a suitable option that ensures the dog doesn't conceive but still gets to be the dominant male around other dogs.

•    Breast reduction

Like the name implies, this type of pet surgery is carried out to reduce the size of a dog's undercarriage due to gaining weight. Alternatively, the operation is also applicable to dogs after they give birth and their breasts enlarge as a result of milk production and suckling by puppies. This type of pet surgery is commonly applied by dog owners who have to maintain their pets' physical appearance and shape for various purposes such as competing in dog shows.

•    Facelifts

As peculiar as it may sound, dog face lifting is becoming a trend in pet surgery. Some dogs have wrinkled faces and droopy skin covering their eyes and interfering with their breathing as a result of age or breed. For such dogs, face lifting is an option that can give them a new lease on life by reducing those wrinkles and giving them a smoother face.

•    Optical replacements

Unfortunately, a dog may lose an eye as a result of a disease or from damage incurred during a fight, and home owners are forced to dress their dogs with eye patches. For dog owners who can't fathom the idea of their dogs looking like pirates, eye replacement is an option. In this kind of pet surgery, the dogs either get their damaged eye restored or fitted with a prosthetic eye for appearance's sake.

Note: These types of pet surgery are usually not offered by regular veterinarians, and, thus, certified specialists must perform them.

About Me
Caring for working dogs

We've always had a large property and our dogs are working dogs. They like to have freedom to run around and play with each other as well as helping us round up the sheep at the end of the day. We don't coddle the dogs by any means, but we do care for them deeply and want them to stay healthy. Sometimes our dogs do get into scrapes and do some silly things, like last year when my older dog ate some baited meat from a fox trap, and do need vet care. This blog has some tips on getting veterinary care for your beloved animals.
